How to Visit Kylemore Abbey in 2026: Hours, Entry, Getting There and How Long to Stay

Kylemore is easy to reach and easy to enjoy, as long as you know three things before you go. The ticket is sold by the abbey itself, and some tour fares include it while others do not. The upper floors of the house are closed, because nuns still live there. And you reach the walled garden by a free shuttle bus. Your ticket: what it covers and where to buy it

One estate ticket opens everything in the paid area. That means the restored ground-floor rooms of the abbey, the Neo-Gothic Church, the Mausoleum, the woodland and lakeshore walks, and the Victorian Walled Garden, with the shuttle bus there and back. It is valid for the whole of the day's opening hours, so you can leave the garden and walk back to the house at your own pace.

You can buy it online or at the visitor centre on the day. The abbey says booking ahead is not necessary, but it does make entry quicker. Getting there

By car, take the N59 west from Galway through Oughterard, about 80 km and 1 hour 15 minutes. The abbey is 20 km from Clifden, about 25 minutes, and about 50 km from Westport by Leenane and Killary Harbour. It sits about 3 km beyond Letterfrack on the Westport road. Without a car, you have three choices. Bus Éireann runs regional services that stop at Kylemore, so check the current timetable before you rely on one. Citylink reaches Letterfrack and Clifden, but not the abbey. The nearest railway stations are Galway and Westport. Access, steps and dogs

The estate is partly accessible. Six of the nine open rooms in the abbey take a wheelchair, and so does the shuttle bus to the garden. Most garden paths do too, though some slopes and steps do not. The Neo-Gothic Church is the one building you cannot enter in a wheelchair. You can borrow a wheelchair, hire one of a small number of mobility scooters, and ask at the visitor centre about the reduced rate for disabled visitors and carers.

Dogs on a lead are welcome outdoors. They cannot go into the buildings or ride the shuttle, so plan on the lakeshore and the woodland paths with them.

How long to allow

The abbey suggests 3 to 6 hours for the whole estate. Most tours give you two, which is enough if you plan it. Here is how the time usually goes:

When to go

May is the best month to aim for. At Belmullet, the nearest Atlantic weather station, May has the most sunshine and the least rain. November is the wettest month, and winter brings shorter opening hours. Whatever the month, pack a rain layer: Kylemore's mountain valley is wetter than the coast.

Close by, on foot

You do not need to leave the estate to fill a day. The Dawros River Walk follows the river for 1 km, about 30 minutes. The Horsechestnut Loop is a five-minute circuit past the pony paddock.
