A cheaper fare, and the Kylemore ticket is your call

This is the day to book when the fare matters, or when you are not sure you want to go inside. From $51 per person you get the coach and a driver-guide for eight hours. The Kylemore entrance fee is left out: Galway Tour Company's driver sells it on board for EUR 14 per person, in cash.

What does that ticket buy? It covers the abbey's ground-floor rooms, the Neo-Gothic Church and the shuttle bus to the Victorian Walled Garden, with the walks and the Mausoleum on the way. Skip it and you can still see the abbey across Pollacappul Lough from the bridge and the car park. The café and the craft shop are outside the paid area too. Check the Kylemore Abbey ticket prices across every tour before you set your budget.

The Inagh Valley road to Kylemore

You leave Galway at 10:00 and head west into Connemara. The first stop is a ten-minute look at the Inagh Valley, between the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk mountains. Then you drive on to Kylemore, the main stop of the day, where you get up to two hours. The estate has a café and a restaurant, so lunch is easy to find.

Killary, Lough Nafooey and 45 minutes in Cong

After the abbey you head for Killary Fjord and a ten-minute photo stop. The coach then takes the Lough Nafooey road, a narrow route through empty valleys, to Cong. Here you get 45 minutes. You can walk round the ruins of the Augustinian abbey, go into Cong Woods on the shore of Lough Corrib, or find the streets where The Quiet Man was filmed.

Travellers split on the balance. Some would give Cong less time and Kylemore more; others find Cong the high point. You are back in Galway at about 18:00.
