Aughnanure Castle

Thirty minutes at the O'Flaherty tower house near Lough Corrib.

An hour at Joyce Country Sheepdogs, with puppies and shearing in high season.

Time for the abbey, the church and the walled garden at your own pace.

A Kylemore day that bends to your group

A coach keeps one timetable for a busload of strangers. This car keeps it for you. Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or rental in Galway and plans the day around your group. Travellers write about extra stops for a playground, for a view, or for the weather. From $673 for up to seven people, you pay for the car, the guide and the Wi-Fi on board.

Entry fees are not included, and that matters at Kylemore. You buy the estate ticket at the gate or online. It opens the ground-floor rooms, the Neo-Gothic Church, the Mausoleum and the Victorian Walled Garden with its shuttle bus. Lunch is yours too, at a stop your guide builds into the day.

Aughnanure Castle and Joe Joyce's sheepdogs

The first stop is Aughnanure Castle, a tower house the O'Flahertys built around 1500 near the shore of Lough Corrib. You get thirty minutes there. Next comes an hour at Joyce Country Sheepdogs, a hill sheep farm where the dogs work the flock in front of you. In high season there are puppies to meet and sheep being sheared.

Lunch in Letterfrack, then Kylemore

Lunch is an hour at Veldon's Seafarer, a pub and restaurant in the middle of Letterfrack. From there it is a short drive to Kylemore and two hours on the estate. With a car waiting for you, there is no coach to rush back to. The day closes on the Sky Road, a loop above Clifden Bay with views out to Inishturk and Turbot.

Priced per car, up to seven

The fare is for the group, so it is best value when you fill the car. Split seven ways it comes to about $96 each, before tickets. A seat on a Galway coach costs less, even on the day with the abbey ticket included. For a couple, the coach is far cheaper. What you pay for here is the pace, the pickup and the stops. Weigh the Kylemore Abbey booking against the coach days side by side.

Who this suits: families and groups of four to seven

Book this if

You are travelling as a family or a group of four to seven and want the car to yourselves. It suits parents with small children, since infant seats are available and strollers are fine, and anyone who wants the sheepdogs and a castle on the same day as Kylemore.

Book something else if

You are a couple on a budget: the Leenane day with the abbey ticket included costs a fraction per head. If you only have half a day, Connemara Chauffeurs also run a private half day from Galway to Kylemore and the Sky Road. The car is not suitable for wheelchair users.
