One answer matters more than the rest. Every tour gives you roughly the same two hours at the same gate, so compare what the fare pays for. On some tours the estate ticket is already in the price. On others you hand the driver cash, or buy it yourself at the visitor centre.
How much do Kylemore Abbey tours cost?
Shared coach days from Galway run from $51 to $134 per person. Private cars from Galway start at $643 for a group of up to seven, and the multi-day tours from Dublin run into the thousands. Each card shows the current fare and what it covers.
Is the Kylemore Abbey ticket included in the tour price?
Only on some tours. Lally Tours' Galway days and the 8-day and 10-day tours from Dublin put the estate ticket in the fare. On the Galway Tour Company and Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours days the driver sells it for cash, and the private cars leave it to you at the gate.
Can you buy tickets at the gate?
Yes. The abbey sells its estate ticket at the visitor centre and on its own website. Booking ahead is not necessary, though the abbey says it gives you a quicker entry.
What are the opening hours?
From early March to late October the estate opens 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:00. In winter it opens 10:00 to 17:00, last admission 16:00, and it closes on 24, 25 and 26 December. The switch dates move each year, so check the abbey's opening times before you travel.
How long do tours spend at Kylemore Abbey?
Most day tours from Galway give you two hours at the estate. The Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours and Ireland Wild Escapes days allow up to three hours, but you spend them either at the abbey or in Connemara National Park.
Do I need to book in advance?
In summer, yes: book a few days ahead, because the coach days fill. Every tour here except the Emerald Pullman rail tour cancels free up to 24 hours before it starts.
Where do the Galway tours leave from?
Lally Tours leaves from outside the HYDE Hotel on Forster Street. Galway Tour Company, Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours and Ireland Wild Escapes leave from the Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road. The private cars collect you where you are staying.
Is there a Kylemore Abbey tour from Dublin?
Not as a day trip, because the abbey is 80 km beyond Galway. From Dublin you can take a 2-day private tour, the 8-day Emerald Pullman rail tour or a 10-day small-group tour, each with a stop at Kylemore.
What does the estate ticket include?
It covers the restored ground-floor rooms of the Abbey, the Neo-Gothic Church and the Mausoleum. It also covers the woodland and lakeshore walks, and the Victorian Walled Garden with the shuttle bus there and back.
Can you go upstairs?
No. The Benedictine community lives in the building, so the visit is a self-guided tour of the ground floor. It takes in Mitchell Henry's library and study, and the drawing room with the only portrait of Margaret Henry.
Is Kylemore Abbey wheelchair accessible?
Partly. Six of the nine open rooms, the garden shuttle bus and most garden paths are accessible, but the Neo-Gothic Church is not. Wheelchairs can be borrowed and a few mobility scooters hired at the visitor centre.
Is lunch included on the day tours?
No day tour here includes lunch. You can eat at the Kylemore Kitchen café, which sits outside the paid area and needs no ticket.
Which tour should I book?
For the ticket sorted, Lally Tours' Leenane day. For the lowest fare, Galway Tour Company's Cong day. For your own pace and your own party, a private car from Galway.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, on a lead. Dogs are welcome on the grounds, but they may not go into the buildings or ride the garden shuttle bus.
Is Kylemore Abbey part of Connemara National Park?
No. The park adjoins the estate: look across the lough from the abbey and you are looking into the park. Its visitor centre is just outside Letterfrack, on the Clifden road.
How do I book a tour?
Choose a tour card and check availability for your date. You book and pay on the tour's own listing, and your confirmation carries the operator's contact and the meeting point.
Is there a Kylemore Abbey and Cliffs of Moher tour?
Only as part of a longer trip. The 10-day Wild Irish small-group tour from Dublin stops at both, and lists the entry to each in its fare.
Can I see Connemara National Park instead of the abbey?
Yes, on the Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours and Ireland Wild Escapes days from Galway. They stop for up to three hours, and you choose one: the abbey, or a walk in the park.
Does my tour guide come inside the abbey?
No. The coach driver-guides wait while you visit on your own. The abbey's own guides give the history talks in the front hall.
Are the tours private or shared?
Both. The shared coaches carry up to 25 to 61 people, depending on the day, and the private cars take a group of three to seven for one price.
Is there a small-group tour?
Yes. Lally Tours runs a small-group day from Galway capped at 25, with a sheepdog demonstration at a Connemara sheep farm and the abbey ticket in the fare.
What is the cancellation policy?
Every day tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. The Emerald Pullman rail tour refunds in full only up to six full days before, and half from two to six days.
Are there guided tours inside the abbey?
Yes. Free history talks run daily at 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00, and you sign up at the guides' desk in the Gallery Saloon. Groups can book a private guided visit for an extra charge.
How long should I spend at the abbey?
The abbey suggests three to six hours for the whole estate. Two hours covers the rooms, the church and the garden if you take the shuttle bus.
Should I see the garden or the abbey first?
On a two-hour stop, ride the shuttle bus out to the garden first and see the abbey when you come back. You finish close to the café and the car park when the time is up.
Who built Kylemore Abbey?
Mitchell Henry, a Manchester-born surgeon and later MP for Galway, built it for his wife, Margaret Henry. She laid the foundation stone on 4 September 1867.
Why is it called an abbey?
Benedictine nuns whose abbey in Ypres was destroyed in the First World War made Kylemore their home in December 1920. The community still lives on the estate.
Where are Mitchell and Margaret Henry buried?
In the small red-brick Mausoleum on the avenue just past the church. Margaret Henry was laid there after she died in 1874, and Mitchell Henry beside her after his death in London in 1910.
Is it worth going in the rain?
Yes. The ground-floor rooms and the Neo-Gothic Church are indoors, and the paths suit a raincoat. If your tour makes you choose between the abbey and a hike in the national park, pick the abbey on a wet day.
Can children visit?
Yes. There is a History Hunter map, a Wild Play area by the Garden Tea House, a pony paddock and Kune Kune pigs. Under-18s must be with an adult; ask the abbey about child and family tickets.
What should I bring?
Rain gear and shoes for wet paths, whatever the forecast says. Bring euro in cash if your tour's driver sells the abbey ticket.
How far is Kylemore Abbey from Galway?
About 80 km by road, west through Connemara on the N59. The day tours from Galway run seven and a half to nine hours in all.
How far is it from Clifden and Westport?
It is 20 km from Clifden and 51 km from Westport, on the N59 between the two. Letterfrack, the nearest village, is 5 km away.
Is there parking?
Yes. The visitor car park is free, and it takes cars, bikes, campervans and buses. It sits outside the paid area, beside the café and the shop.
Can I get there by public bus?
Bus Éireann runs regional services that stop at Kylemore itself. Citylink reaches Letterfrack and Clifden but not the abbey, so check the current timetable before you rely on either.
