The abbey from the water, the church in the woods, and the Connemara road you
travel to reach them. Weighing up a Kylemore Abbey tour? These are the views you will stop
for.
The first frames are the view every tour stops for. The abbey's granite front and tall
corner tower stand reflected in the still water of Pollacappul Lough, below a wooded
mountainside. You see it through overhanging branches, across reeds and past water lilies.
Then it appears under a bare spring slope, and in mist and low cloud, which is how you may well
find it on the day.
Next comes the Neo-Gothic Church, a short walk along the lough, its tower and pinnacles
against a misty hillside. The rest is the road there and back. Sheepdogs work blackface sheep
above a long inlet, and the ruin of Clifden Castle stands among grazing sheep. You also pass a
pine island on a lough, the path towards Diamond Hill in the national park, a thatched
cottage, an upturned currach and the monks' fishing house at Cong.
