What a Kylemore Abbey private tour is
It is a car and a driver-guide for your party alone, collected where you are staying and
brought back at the end of the day. You pay one price for the vehicle, up to a set number of
people, so the fare is the same whether two of you travel or the car is full.
The private days from Galway run from a half day of four to five hours to a full day of
eight. Each gives you about two hours at Kylemore and adds its own stops: Aughnanure Castle, a
working sheepdog farm, the Sky Road or Cong. From Westport or Ballina there is a private day
that sees the abbey from outside, and from Dublin a two-day car with about five hours at the
estate.
One thing is the same on every private tour here: the estate ticket is not in the fare. You
buy it at the visitor centre or online, and your driver waits while you visit.
Why choose a private tour
The car comes to you
No early walk to a kerb. The Galway cars collect you from your hotel, and the other days
start in Westport, Ballina or Dublin.
You set the pace
On past private days, drivers have stopped at a playground for children, shaped the day
around a vegetarian family, and pulled in wherever a couple asked. A coach cannot wait for one
party.
Your own seats for small children
Connemara Chauffeurs' day and half day, and the 2-day car from Dublin, list infant seats.
Lally Tours' Leenane coach and Galway Tour Company's coach do not supply them.
Stops a coach does not make
Aughnanure Castle, an hour at Joyce Country Sheepdogs, lunch at Veldon's Seafarer, two hours
at Killary Sheep Farm, or a full hour at the Royal Abbey of Cong, depending on the day you
book.
Private tours vs a seat on the coach
The price gap closes as your party grows. This is what each of you pays for a day from
Galway, before the abbey ticket where it is extra.
| Private day, Connemara Chauffeurs | Coach, Lally Tours' Leenane day | Coach, Galway Tour Company |
|---|
| Fare | $673 per group, up to 7 | $76 per person | $51 per person |
| Each, for 2 | $336 | $76 | $51 |
| Each, for 4 | $168 | $76 | $51 |
| Each, for 7 | $96 | $76 | $51 |
| Abbey ticket | Extra | In the fare | EUR 14 cash, extra |
| Pickup | Your hotel | The HYDE Hotel, or your hotel on request | The Kinlay Hostel |
| Pace | Yours | The coach's | The coach's |

For a couple, the coach costs a fraction of the car. For seven, the private day comes to
about $96 each, still more than the Lally seat with its ticket, but for a car that is
yours all day. If you are two or three and cost matters most, the
bus tours from Galway to Kylemore Abbey are the better buy.
What you get, and what you don't
- Included: the vehicle and your driver-guide for the day, and pickup where
you stay. Connemara Chauffeurs' cars carry WiFi.
- Not included on any private tour here: the Kylemore Abbey ticket. Buy it at
the visitor centre, or online before you go.
- Not included: the other sites' admissions, such as the sheepdog farm, the
sheep farm and Aughnanure Castle, and lunch.
- On the 2-day tour from Dublin: no hotel. Accommodation and lunch are listed
as extra.
- From Westport or Ballina: Kylemore is a photo stop outside, not a visit.
Four to five hours, back by the afternoon
Connemara Chauffeurs' half day takes up to seven from your Galway hotel: two hours at Kylemore, the Sky Road, and infant seats on request.

Planning a private tour
- Budget: $643 to $930 per group for a day, and $3,043 for
two days from Dublin. Add the abbey ticket for each of you, lunch, and any other
admissions.
- Count your party first: each price covers a set number of people, from three
on Walk About Galway's day to seven on Connemara Chauffeurs'. A bigger party needs a second
car.
- Book once your dates are fixed: each price buys one car and one driver for
the day. Every private tour here refunds in full up to 24 hours before.
- Allow the day: the full days run about eight hours. The half day is four to
five, and 80 km each way leaves two hours at the abbey and little else.
- Tell the operator what you need: children's seats, a vegetarian lunch stop,
or a slower day.
Who should choose something else
- If you are travelling alone. You pay the whole car. A coach seat costs from
$51, and the Leenane day from Galway includes the ticket for $76.
- If you want the ticket in the price. No private tour here includes it. Lally
Tours' coach days and the 10-day tour from Dublin do.
- If you want to see inside the abbey from Westport. Neal Doherty's day stops
outside for photographs. Drive the 50 km, or base yourself in Galway.
- If anyone uses a wheelchair. Only Walk About Galway's sheep-farm day is sold
as wheelchair accessible, so ask before you book any other car.
- If you want the whole estate. The private days still give you about two
hours. For the three to six the abbey suggests, drive yourself, or take the 2-day car from
Dublin with its five hours.
Frequently asked questions
Are the tours private or shared?
Both. The shared coaches carry up to 25 to 61 people, depending on the day, and the private cars take a group of three to seven for one price.
How much is a private tour per person?
Divide the group price by your party. Connemara Chauffeurs' day costs $673 for up to seven: about $96 each for seven, $168 each for four and $336 each for two, before the abbey ticket.
Is the abbey ticket included on a private tour?
No private tour here lists the estate ticket in its fare. You buy it yourself at the visitor centre or on the abbey's website, and your driver-guide waits while you visit.
Where do the private tours pick you up?
Wherever you are staying. The Galway cars collect you in the city, Neal Doherty's day starts in Westport or Ballina, and the 2-day tour collects you in Dublin.
Do the private cars have child seats?
Connemara Chauffeurs' day and half day list infant seats, and so does the 2-day tour from Dublin. Tell the operator your children's ages when you book, so the right seat is in the car.
Is there a wheelchair-accessible private tour?
Walk About Galway's sheep-farm day is sold as wheelchair accessible. At the estate, six of the nine open rooms, the garden shuttle and most garden paths take a wheelchair; the
Neo-Gothic Church does not.
What is the cancellation policy?
Every day tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. The Emerald Pullman rail tour refunds in full only up to six full days before, and half from two to six days.
