Check AvailabilityIn Connemara the weather does not stop your visit, but it does shape it. Rain decides between the garden and the rooms, and the season sets the hours. Planning your Kylemore Abbey booking? Pick your month here first.

Most of a Kylemore visit is outdoors. You walk along the lough to the church, ride the shuttle to a six-acre garden, and choose from gravel paths through the woods. Only the abbey's rooms, the church and the bothy keep you dry.
Rain is the rule here, not the exception. Met Éireann's station at Belmullet, the nearest one on this Atlantic coast, records about 1,242 mm a year, with 1 mm or more falling on around 200 days. Kylemore sits in a mountain valley, which is likely wetter still.
The season changes your clock too. From early March to late October the estate is open 10:00 to 18:00. In winter it closes an hour earlier, and the garden closes at 16:30. The figures below are Belmullet's averages for 1991 to 2020.
Highs average 8.9 °C and lows 3.9 °C. About 136.9 mm of rain falls, on 20 days. The sun shows for 1.4 hours a day. The estate keeps winter hours, 10:00 to 17:00, and the garden closes at 16:30. Gales blow on about six days, so pack a windproof layer.
Highs average 9.2 °C and lows 3.9 °C. About 109.9 mm of rain falls, on 18 days. The sun shows for 2.4 hours a day. Winter hours hold. In 2026 the summer hours began on 9 March, so check the switch date for your year.
Highs average 10.5 °C and lows 4.9 °C. About 90.6 mm of rain falls, on 17 days. The sun shows for 3.5 hours a day. Summer hours begin in early March: 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00. Rain eases through the month.
Highs average 12.2 °C and lows 6 °C. About 74 mm of rain falls, on 14 days. The sun shows for 5.3 hours a day. Rain falls on fewer days. In 2025 the summer talks began on 9 April, and the abbey runs children's events at Easter.
Highs average 14.6 °C and lows 8.2 °C. About 70.8 mm of rain falls, on 13 days. The sun shows for 6.3 hours a day. The sunniest month, and the one with the least rain. It is the month to pick for the walks and the garden.
Highs average 16.3 °C and lows 10.6 °C. About 73 mm of rain falls, on 12 days. The sun shows for 5.6 hours a day. Your ticket now includes guided garden tours, through August. Long daylight leaves room for the river walk after the garden.
Highs average 17.6 °C and lows 12.3 °C. About 85.9 mm of rain falls, on 15 days. The sun shows for 4.4 hours a day. The warmest month with August. In summer the abbey has run pony feeding, garden talks and a church tour every day.
Highs average 17.7 °C and lows 12.4 °C. About 100.5 mm of rain falls, on 16 days. The sun shows for 4.6 hours a day. Rain rises again. In 2025 the summer programme ran until 31 August, and garden tours end with the month.
Highs average 16.5 °C and lows 11 °C. About 102.6 mm of rain falls, on 16 days. The sun shows for 4 hours a day. The estate keeps summer hours and the talks programme has ended. The Emerald Pullman rail tour has its September departures.
Highs average 13.8 °C and lows 8.7 °C. About 131.2 mm of rain falls, on 19 days. The sun shows for 3 hours a day. Rain climbs past 130 mm. Winter hours start late in the month, and the abbey runs children's events at Halloween.
Highs average 11 °C and lows 6.3 °C. About 139.6 mm of rain falls, on 21 days. The sun shows for 1.7 hours a day. The wettest month. In 2025 the abbey also closed for one day, on 19 November. Bring full rain gear.
Highs average 9.2 °C and lows 4.6 °C. About 126.6 mm of rain falls, on 21 days. The sun shows for 1.2 hours a day. Closed on 24, 25 and 26 December. The sun shows for about an hour a day, so arrive well before the 16:00 last entry.
If you can choose, choose late spring. May brings the most sun and the least rain, and the estate is on its long summer hours.
| Season | Average high | Wet days | Estate hours | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring: March–May | 12.4 °C | 44 | 10:00–18:00 | Fewer wet days; spring bedding in the garden |
| Summer: June–August | 17.2 °C | 43 | 10:00–18:00 | Warmest; guided garden tours; the fullest talks programme |
| Autumn: September–November | 13.8 °C | 56 | Summer hours, then winter from late October | Rain builds; winter hours begin |
| Winter: December–February | 9.1 °C | 59 | 10:00–17:00 | Shortest days; closed 24–26 December |
Summer is warmest and has the fullest programme of talks, but the rain returns in August. Autumn is wet and the woods turn. In winter the days are short, so plan to be through the gate by early afternoon.
Compare the days by where they start, how long you get at the abbey, and whether the ticket is in the fare.
If you drive, arrive for the 10:00 opening. The coaches leave Galway between 09:30 and 10:30 and stop on the way, so at 10:00 you are ahead of them.
On a still morning the lough holds the abbey's reflection, the view you see in most photographs. Wind breaks it up, so take your picture first and see the rooms after.
Late in the day, watch the clock. Last entry is 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter, and the winter garden closes at 16:30. On a wet afternoon, do the garden first while the light lasts and finish in the abbey.
On a tour the timing is set for you. What you can choose is the order: garden first, rooms last, when rain is on the way.
Monthly figures are Met Éireann's 1991–2020 averages for Belmullet. Hours and closures come from the abbey's own pages, read in 2026. The 2025 programme dates come from Connemara's tourism site.
