Kylemore Abbey and Connemara Itinerary, Stop by Stop

A day at Kylemore Abbey from Galway is really a day in Connemara with two hours at the abbey in the middle of it. Where those two hours fall, and what fills the rest, depends on which route your coach takes. This guide walks the day from the kerb in Galway to the drop-off in the evening, using the stops and minutes each Kylemore Abbey tour publishes, and then shows how to stretch it to two days.

What time do the Galway tours leave?

The coaches leave the city centre between 09:30 and 10:30, from one of two kerbs. Lally Tours uses the HYDE Hotel on Forster Street. Galway Tour Company, Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours and Ireland Wild Escapes use the Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road. The private cars collect you where you are staying.

Be at the kerb ten minutes early. Galway Tour Company asks you to check in by 09:45 for a 10:00 start, and the Lally Tours team wears blue jackets, so you can spot them from across the street. The Kylemore Abbey map lists both kerbs and where they sit.

Which way do they go?

Galway to Kylemore is about 80 km on the N59 through Oughterard, and a car does it in about 1 hour 15 minutes. No coach drives it straight. Each operator loops through Connemara by its own route, and the route decides your day more than the abbey stop does.

The Leenane route gives you the most water: Killary and the coast road home. The Cong route gives you a second abbey and a village stop. The Clifden route gives you the town and the Sky Road, and the longest stop of any day, at the price of choosing between the abbey and the park.

What happens in Leenane and at Killary?

Leenane is a small village at the head of Killary Harbour, where the N59 from Westport runs along the water. Lally Tours stops there for 30 minutes, long enough to stretch your legs by the water. The Lally small-group day stops at Leenane's Sheep and Wool Centre instead.

Killary itself is a long, narrow sea inlet between steep mountains, and the abbey's own site calls it a true fjord. Most coaches give it a photo stop of 10 to 15 minutes, so have your camera ready as the coach pulls in.

When do you reach Kylemore, and how do you spend two hours?

That depends on the route. Galway Tour Company drives to Kylemore first and sees Cong in the afternoon. Lally Tours' Leenane day stops at Leenane and Killary first, so you reach the abbey later. The Clifden-route days see Clifden and the Sky Road before the long stop.

Whenever you arrive, two hours goes further with a plan. This one fits the whole paid area into the time:

1. Minutes 0-10: walk in and take the free shuttle bus to the Victorian Walled Garden.
2. Minutes 10-50: the garden. The eastern half holds the flower beds, the glasshouses and the head gardener's house; the western half holds the vegetables, the herbs and a long herbaceous border.
3. Minutes 50-60: the shuttle back to the abbey.
4. Minutes 60-90: the restored ground-floor rooms, from Mitchell Henry's library to the Drawing Room with the only portrait of Margaret Henry.
5. Minutes 90-110: the five-minute lakeside walk to the Neo-Gothic Church, and on past it to the Mausoleum.
6. Minutes 110-120: back to the coach, past the café and the shop.

Garden first or abbey first?

Garden first, on almost every day. The shuttle takes you out and brings you back to the abbey, and the rest of the visit then ends near the café and the car park, where your coach waits. Done the other way, you finish at the far end of the estate with a shuttle ride between you and the coach.

Guides on Lally Tours' small-group day give the same advice, and travellers who took it say it left time to shop and eat. One went to the garden first and liked it even more than the house.

Where do you eat?

No day tour from Galway includes lunch, so plan to buy it at the estate. You have two places:

• The Kylemore Kitchen café sits by the car park, outside the paid area, so it needs no ticket. It has opened 10:00 to 17:30 in summer, and children's portions are half price.
• The Garden Tea House is inside the paid area, so you need your ticket. It opens 11:00 to 16:00. On a wet day, tea, cake and scones there are a good reason to linger.

On a two-hour stop, eat after the garden rather than before it. Lally Tours' Leenane day counts lunch inside its two hours at the abbey, so you are not given extra time to eat. Connemara Chauffeurs' private day stops for an hour's lunch at Veldon's Seafarer before Kylemore.

What about Cong?

Cong is the second half of Galway Tour Company's day. You reach it by the Lough Nafooey road after Killary, and you get about 45 minutes for the village and the ruins of the Royal Abbey of Cong. The small stone monks' fishing house stands over the river.

The Connemara and Cong day is the cheapest day from Galway, from $51 per person. Fay's Ireland's private day gives the Royal Abbey a full hour, and the 2-day private tour from Dublin gives Cong two.

Clifden and the Sky Road

Clifden is 20 km from Kylemore, about 25 minutes by car. The Sky Road runs west out of the town along the coast. Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours gives Clifden 30 minutes and then drives the Sky Road, and Ireland Wild Escapes does the same.

The private cars add it too. Connemara Chauffeurs' day and half day each give the Sky Road 20 minutes after Kylemore. Neal Doherty's day from Westport gives it 30 minutes and Clifden a full hour.

Driving the loop yourself

With a car, you can copy any of the coach routes and give the abbey as long as you like. Take the N59 west from Galway through Oughterard. The abbey is about 3 km beyond Letterfrack on the Westport road, and its sat nav point is 53.5618, -9.8880. The car park is free.

A good loop runs out on the N59 by Oughterard, spends the middle of the day at Kylemore, and comes home through Leenane and Killary, the way Lally Tours goes out. Stretching it to two days

Two days let you do what no coach can: see the whole estate, then the national park next door. Stay near Letterfrack, 3 km away, or in Clifden, 20 km away.

Day one, the estate. The abbey suggests three to six hours. Add a history talk and the walks to the rooms, the church and the garden. The Dawros River Walk runs 1 km along the river, about 30 minutes. The Horsechestnut Loop is a five-minute circuit. The Tree Trail and the walk to the Sruffaunduff waterfall add more, and children like the Giant's Ironing Stone, a wishing stone with a legend.

Day two, the park and the coast. Connemara National Park's visitor centre is just outside Letterfrack, and four waymarked trails start there, from the easy 0.5 km Ellis Wood Nature Trail to the 3.7 km Upper Diamond Hill climb. From 1 July 2026 the visitor centre closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, but the trails stay open. Finish in Clifden and on the Sky Road.
